What This Marker Tells Us
Measures eosinophils as a proportion of total WBC, helping identify allergic conditions, parasitic infections, or eosinophilic disorders.
Why It Matters
Eosinophil percentage shows the relative abundance of eosinophils among white cells. Normal is 0-5%. High eosinophil percentage (eosinophilia) typically indicates allergies, asthma, parasitic infections, drug reactions, or eosinophilic disorders. Percentage can reveal eosinophilia even when absolute count seems borderline, or may be elevated relatively when other WBC types are decreased. However, absolute eosinophil count is more clinically useful for assessing severity and disease risk. Percentage helps with pattern recognition but should always be confirmed with absolute count. Persistent elevation warrants investigation for underlying allergic disease, parasites, or rare eosinophilic syndromes.
How to Interpret Your Trends
Normal eosinophil percentage: 0-5% of WBC. Mild elevation (5-10%) commonly reflects allergies, asthma, or mild eosinophilic conditions. Moderate elevation (10-20%) may indicate significant allergic disease, parasitic infection, or drug reactions. High elevation (above 20%) raises concern for severe allergic conditions, parasitic infections, or hypereosinophilic syndrome. Very low percentage (near 0%) can occur with acute stress, steroids, or acute infections. Always correlate with absolute count
What Influences This Marker
Eosinophil percentage increases with allergic conditions (asthma, hay fever, eczema), parasitic infections, drug reactions, eosinophilic disorders, certain malignancies, and relatively when other WBC types decrease. It decreases with acute infections, steroids, acute stress, and relatively when neutrophils or lymphocytes markedly increase. Percentage should generally parallel absolute count but can diverge with extreme WBC changes.
