Sodium

What This Marker Means

Sodium helps regulate hydration, nerve function, and fluid balance. Low sodium can cause fatigue, headaches, confusion, or weakness. High sodium often reflects dehydration.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol promotes fluid loss and can reduce sodium levels, especially with binge drinking. Chronic heavy drinking can contribute to hyponatremia (low sodium).

How to Discuss With Your Doctor

Ask whether your sodium level indicates dehydration or electrolyte imbalance. If low, discuss whether alcohol, medications, or fluid intake patterns may be contributing factors.
