Red Blood Cell Count

What This Marker Means

RBCs carry oxygen throughout the body. Low RBC levels may indicate anemia, nutrient deficiencies, or chronic disease. High levels are less common but can appear with dehydration.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol can suppress bone marrow production of RBCs and reduce levels of folate, B12, and B1—nutrients essential for red blood cell formation. Dehydration from drinking may artificially raise RBC concentration.

How to Discuss With Your Doctor

Ask whether your RBC level is healthy and whether nutrient deficiencies or alcohol-related marrow suppression could be influencing the result.
