Platelet Count

What This Marker Means

Platelets help with blood clotting. Low platelets increase bleeding risk; high platelets may reflect inflammation or bone marrow activation.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol suppresses platelet production and can dramatically reduce the count in frequent or heavy drinkers. Binge drinking may temporarily lower platelets before they rebound.

How to Discuss With Your Doctor

If platelets are low, ask whether alcohol, nutritional deficits, or liver function are contributing. Discuss when retesting is appropriate and whether further evaluation is needed.
