Hemoglobin

What This Marker Means

Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells. Low levels indicate anemia, which can cause fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol contributes to anemia through nutrient deficiencies (B12, folate, B1), bone marrow suppression, and GI irritation that can reduce absorption. Even moderate chronic drinking may lower hemoglobin over time.

How to Discuss With Your Doctor

Ask whether your hemoglobin level suggests nutrient deficiency, anemia, or inflammation. If low, request evaluation of B12, folate, and iron status, noting your alcohol intake pattern.
