Hematocrit

What This Marker Means

Hematocrit measures the percentage of your blood made up of red blood cells. It reflects oxygen-carrying capacity, hydration status, and red blood cell production. Low levels suggest anemia, while high levels often indicate dehydration or smoking.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol can lower hematocrit by impairing red blood cell production and causing nutrient deficiencies (B12, folate, B1). Dehydration from drinking may temporarily raise hematocrit.

How to Discuss With Your Doctor

Ask whether your hematocrit suggests anemia, nutrient deficiency, or dehydration. If low, discuss evaluating B12, folate, and iron—especially if you drink regularly.
