GGT

What This Marker Means
GGT is one of the most sensitive markers of alcohol-related liver stress. It reflects bile duct function and oxidative stress. Elevated GGT often appears before changes in AST or ALT.
How Alcohol Affects This Marker
Alcohol is the most common cause of elevated GGT. Even moderate frequent drinking can raise this enzyme. Levels often decrease after 2–6 weeks of reduced drinking.
How to Discuss With Your Doctor
Ask directly whether your GGT level suggests alcohol-related liver strain. If elevated, discuss retesting after a period of lower alcohol use to track improvement.
