Cholesterol / HDL Ratio

What This Marker Means
This ratio compares total cholesterol to HDL and helps estimate cardiovascular risk. Lower ratios generally indicate lower risk, while higher ratios reflect more cholesterol circulating relative to “good” cholesterol.
How Alcohol Affects This Marker
Alcohol-induced increases in HDL may artificially improve this ratio, making it look more favorable than it truly is. Meanwhile, alcohol-driven triglyceride elevation can worsen overall lipid metabolism even if this ratio appears normal.
How to Discuss With Your Doctor
Ask whether this ratio is reliable in your case or if alcohol use makes it less accurate. Request that your doctor interpret your full lipid panel instead of relying on one summary ratio.
