HDL Cholesterol

What This Marker Means

HDL is often called the “good cholesterol” because it helps transport excess cholesterol away from arteries. Higher numbers are generally associated with lower cardiovascular risk. However, extremely high HDL can sometimes indicate metabolic stress rather than protection.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol—especially moderate intake—can artificially raise HDL. This can make overall cholesterol profiles appear healthier than they actually are. In heavy drinkers, high HDL may mask metabolic or liver dysfunction.

How to Discuss With Your Doctor

Ask whether your HDL level is truly protective or whether alcohol may be inflating it. Request interpretation alongside triglycerides, LDL, and liver enzymes.
