AST is a liver enzyme that reflects cellular stress and inflammation. High AST suggests liver irritation but is not liver-specific—it’s also found in muscle. AST is used alongside ALT to interpret liver status.

How Alcohol Affects This Marker

Alcohol tends to raise AST more than ALT. A hallmark of alcohol-related liver stress is an AST:ALT ratio > 2. AST may rise even when symptoms are minimal.

Ask whether your AST level and AST:ALT ratio suggest alcohol-related liver stress. If elevated, discuss whether temporary abstinence and retesting are recommended.
